Big Year Universe

Matthew: Hello this is Matthew Bird

Nicholas: and this is Nicholas Bird

Together: and welcome to 'Big Year Universe'

Nicholas: Matthew and I have a goal to embark on a Big Year in 2023.

Matthew: A Big Year is when you try to see or hear as many bird species in the wild in a year as you can. We have decided to share our interest with all of you through a blog, podcast, and youtube channel.

Nicholas: The objective is to produce content selflessly (sharing with others) and selfishly (forcing us to create content and learn as much about birds as we can given the other demands to our time.

Matthew: We will have three segments to Big Year Universe. 1. Facts about birds 2. jokes about birds 3. stuff for birds

Nicholas: In segment 1 we will select a species and share some facts bout said species. In episode 1 we will share information regarding the Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis)

Matthew: In segment 2 we will share jokes or funny stories about birds.

Nicholas: In segment 3 we will share information regarding stuff about birding or projects to drive our birding hobby.

Matthew: onto our first segment: facts about birds:

Nicholas: today we will give you a taste of what the content will be in future segments. In episode 2 we will expand slightly on the Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis)

Matthew: the easy way to spot these birds is to look for the color red. If you don't see the color red, look out for the triangle head. A male cardinal has a triangle head and they are red. Juvenile and females are more of a brown, gray, black color, but they have triangle heads and the same kind of beak and tail feathers.  Most male birds, not just cardinals, have colorful and vivid feathers, like a male peacock.

Nicholas: 1. red bird

2. triangle head

Jokes about Birds

Nicholas: welcome to segment 2 jokes about birds. Introducing Matthew Bird

Matthew Bird: thank you for that introduction

1. Q why didn't the chicken cross the road

A he was too chicken

2. Q why did the bird crash into the glass?

A He had soar eyes

Matthew: our last segment is 'stuff for birds':

Nicholas: today we are going to explain how to build and install a bark feeder

Matthew: This is what you're going need:

  1. branch with diameter around 2-3" (cut in one foot sections)
  2. 1 x 4 piece of wood (cut into 4" squares)
  3. eye screws (long enough to go through wood square and end of branch section)
  4. bark butter
  5. tree branch hooks
Nicholas: drill 3/8 in holes all along the branch section. drill holes slightly smaller than the screws in the middle of the 4 x 4 piece of wood and one end of the branch section. insert screw through hole in 4 x 4 and wood. slather branch with peanut butter. hang branch hook on designated branch. hang feeder on branch hook

Matthew: thank you for joining us in the Big Year Universe. Until next time, this is Matthew Bird

Nicholas: and this is Nicholas Bird
